The idea of self reliance as described by the American transcendentalist Ralph Waldo Emerson consist of several philosophic guidelines. One principle of  Emerson’s ideology  is that every man and woman should at no cost become a conformist. That is, one must find it’s own way thru life by following what he or she believes is right, regardless of the social implications of one’s decisions. Only thru being a nonconformist one can truly be free, for this is the only way to brake the mental constrains that society puts upon one’s shoulders.

Another derivative of Emerson’s theory is the principal of solitude. because the society in a potential hazard in one’s way to achieve and act upon what he or she thinks is true, one must try to avoid being to surrounded by society, for it bares the danger of conforming this person and training him into submission, in a manner the will take away his specific and original way of thought.
